Susan Anne Hollis, PSA, has spent most of her summers since childhood on Cape Cod. Now a professional landscape painter, the tranquil beach scenes, sparkling waters and wind-swept dunes that have caught her artist’s eye throughout her lifetime figure prominently in her impressionistic oils and pastels that grace the walls of homes, offices and studios throughout the United States.
After earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Textile Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, Susan worked as a freelance fiber artist, completing commissions for corporate clients and exhibiting in galleries around New England. Painting, at first a way to unwind from the physical demands of the loom, gradually became her passion. In 1990, she took up the pastime professionally. Susan takes her inspiration from the beauty of the world that surrounds her. She spends her summers and falls painting on location amidst the sand dunes and marshlands of Cape Cod. She also travels throughout New England, as well as the southwestern United States, France, Italy and England. Camera in hand, she observes the subtle nuances of light and shadow as she photographs scenes that catch her eye; plein-air studies give her finished works a jump start, a freshness that photography alone cannot provide. A Copley Artist, Susan lives and paints full-time in her new studio on the Cape, creating colorful, peaceful works that have won her Signature membership in the Pastel Society of America and a place in such juried shows as the American Artists Professional League (Salmagundi Club) in New York City, Signature 2009 at the Cape Museum of Fine Arts, Hudson River Valley Art Association, NY, and The Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Club, NY. In addition to the Copley Society of Boston, Susan is a Fellow Member at the American Artists Professional League, a gallery artist at the Cape Cod Art Association and the South Shore Art Association, a Signature member of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, The Connecticut Pastel Society, The Pastel Painter’s Society of Cape Cod and the Pastel Painters of Maine.
