Artist's Statement:
Sometimes it’s hard to calm my excitement about painting. However, it’s in the calm moments when that spark of inspiration comes walking in. In my searches for possible outdoor painting reference, I have passed a certain house a hundred times…then on another day that same house unexpectedly jumps out at me and I’m filled with inspiration and I can’t wait to put it on canvas. Was that moment due to the way the light hit just right?…or was it because I saw it on that split second of quiet between my racing thoughts? I feel my paintings are most successful when I enjoy the process. For me if the painting is a continuous fight or struggle then I know I should stop, reassess…maybe I’ll put the painting aside for a while. Usually when I revisit it, my attitude about the subject has changed…a door has opened and painting resumes, everything flows. Sometimes it’s just the wrong road to be on and I accept that it is a dead end and time to move on. After retiring from commissioned portraits, I started using a palette knife. It is a very exciting and challenging way to paint. The result is cleaner colors and the impasto effect that I can achieve adds to the depth of the work. As for subject matter, everything interests me…landscapes, seascapes, people, animals, old equipment and seagulls. It’s endless and I feel blessed to have been given this talent and enjoyment in what I do. I hope viewers and collectors will feel pleasantly moved and delighted by my work as well. |
